Blind chess players shine

  • RAJESH RAJPUT stood joint second in an international chess tournament held by Braille Chess Association at Sheffield (England) from November 12-14.Baroda’s Rajput, who is partially blind, shared the limelight with Joseph D’Mello of Income Tax (Mumbai) who finished ninth, and Eknath Sawant who was 10th. Both Sawant and D’Mello are totally blind.
  • The three players had been sent to this meet by the Blind Welfare Association and the Maharashtra Chess Association.

    Navy regatta

  • December 4, 28 winters ago, the Indian Navy was called upon to launch an attack on Karachi port. That day is celebrated as Navy Day annually; the Western Command will kick off the Navy Week this Saturday with the sailing regatta at Sunk Rock, Mumbai harbour.
  • Rear Admiral R Chopra, an avid sailor, confirmed his participation in the festive event. Former and current National champions will also be on view, among them Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee and former World Enterprise championCommander Homi Motivala.

    Eight classes of boats will participate. They range from the larger, three-crew J-24 and Lightning, to Optimist, a beginners boat for single yachtsmen under 15 years. The larger boats will race with handicaps, while Optimist and Cadet will race a shorter course.
