Top stars for Circuit Meet

Veteran P T Usha, quarter-mile ace Paramjeet Singh and India’s latest track sensation Sunita Rani are among the stalwarts who are to take part in the one-day Bristol National athletic circuit meet at the Priyadarshini Park on October 7.

Field specialists Bahadur Singh, Shakti Singh and Neelam J Singh are also to be seen in action along with long distance runner Gulab Chand, according to a release from the Bombay City District Amateur Athletic Association (BCDAAA).

Eleven medal winners in the recently held Asian Junior Championship at Singapore are also here to rub shoulders with the seniors.

Cash prizes would be awarded to the top three finishers in each event while an additional Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 25,000 would be given to athletes bettering the National and continental records.

Kosalraman Memorial football

St Xavier’s Sports Club, Vile Parle, will conduct the inaugural J Kosalraman memorial veteran’s invitational football tournament from October 16. TataSC, Mahindras, Air-India, Central Railway, Bombay Customs, Goan Sports, Reserve Bank, Bombay Port Trust, Western Railway and Karnataka Bank have confirmed their participation. Other teams wishing to participate in the event should contact Shekar Bangera, Derrick Pereira or Jolly Misquitta at the venue between 5.30 pm and 7 pm.

Veterans badminton tourney

The fourth edition of the GD Birla Memorial Veterans badminton (Inter-club) tournament will be held at the Bombay Gymkhana courts from October 12 to 16. Entries close on October 8.

Cricket coaching camp

The Thane cricket coaching camp, under the auspices of the Ghantali Prabhodini Sanstha, for boys under-14 will be held at the Ghantali Path, Thane (W).

University selection trials

The Director/Heads of University Deparment, the Deans and Principal of Colleges are hereby informed the the University is likely to take part in the Police Invitational cricket tournament to held from October 30 onwards at Mumbai.

It has been decided to hold the selection trials to select the University team. The venue, dates and time will be intimated later.

Colleges are, therefore, requested to depute their best cricket players, no more than five, from their colleges, who are not full time employed for the purpose of the above selection trials. The names of the players should be sent to the Director of Phy. Edn and Sports, the University Sports Pavilion, Marine Lines, by October 8.

Joshi adjudged best

Sunil Gavaskar, Sir Vivian Richards and Tony Greig have chosen Sunil Joshi as the BPL Player of the Week for the period September 24 to 30. Sunil Joshi’s record performance of five wickets for six runs wiped out the South African toporder in the league phase of the Quadrangular tournment in Kenya.

Vijay Bharadwaj’s all-round performance in his debut series was also in contention for the award alongwith Lance Klusener who swashbuckling 101 not out against Zimbabwe took South Africa to the final. But the adjudicators unanimously voted for Joshi whose record performance overshadowed the rest. Joshi will receive a cash award of US $ 500.
