Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was finally able to assemble his entire Euro 2004 squad for a training session, although injured full-back Nuno Valente was confined to light running. Striker Pauleta Resendes, who scored the only goal in Paris St Germain’s French Cup final win over Chateauroux on Saturday, trained with the squad for the first time on Monday at their base in Obidos, 80 kms north of Lisbon.
France look to move up a gear
France will be looking to move up a gear as they enter the final stage of their preparations. After a relaxing week on the Mediterranean coast, the French players will gather on Tuesday evening at their training camp at Clairefontaine, just outside the capital.
“We will have to shift to a higher gear,” coach Jacques Santini said after the 4-0 trashing of Andorra last week. “Serious matters really start on Tuesday.”
Nikolaidis troubled by injury
Greece coach Otto Rehhagel must decide whether his leading striker Demis Nikolaidis will be fit for Euro 2004 after sustaining a leg injury, officials said on Tuesday. Rehhagel, who must submit his final squad to UEFA on Wednesday, could risk Nikolaidis or replace him with Yannis Amanatidis. “A decision will be taken in the coming days,” an official said. “The injury as such does not rule Nikolaidis out.”
