PUNE, Aug 22: Fissures in the Nationalist Congress Party over the demand for a “better candidate” other than the official nominee, Kailas Kodre, for the Pune Cantonment Assembly constituency, seems to be widening with party workers contemplating to field an independent rebel candidate against Kodre.

Meanwhile, the NCP for the Haveli Assembly seat, one of the prime aspirants and former MLA Dnyaneshwar Landge himself proposed the candidature of former Pimpri-Chinchwad Mayor Azam Pansare. Landge’s suggestion comes in sharp contrast to the warning by corporators supporting him that they would leave the party if Landge was not given the party ticket.

Five major aspirants for the Cantonment seat had yesterday alleged that NCP district president Jagannath Shewale and Pune Lok Sabha candidate Vitthal Tupe had joined hands to force the candidature of Kodre. At a meeting held in Hadapsar today, party workers criticised the decision to give the candidature to Kodre, charging that he had not even joined the NCP. Among the major aspirants of the NCP who were present at the meeting included Jalinder Kamthe, Suresh Ghule, Sopanrao Gondhale, Chandrakant Beedkar, Suresh Kadam, and Rajlaxmi Bhosale.

Maintaining that Kodre had not asked for the candidature, the party workers were unanimous in their demand for nominating another candidate to replace Kodre. They said that they would campaign for any candidate other than Kodre. A delegation of the party workers will be meeting NCP leader Sharad Pawar to convince him to reverse the decision.
