The Bengaluru police said Wednesday they have arrested a Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) staff member for alleged sexual harassment of a 32-year-old South Korean woman.

The accused has been identified as Mohammed Affann Ahmed, 25.

The incident reportedly occurred when the woman was preparing to depart India after clearing immigration Monday. She filed a complaint, based on which airport security detained the accused and handed him over to the police. The police later arrested him and registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the complaint filed by the South Korean woman, a male airport staffer approached her during routine ticket/baggage procedures, claiming her checked baggage was emitting a “beeping sound” and that returning to the regular screening counter would delay her departure. The accused staffer then asked her to undergo a separate “manual frisking” and took her near a men’s washroom on the pretext of inspecting her luggage.

Once in the isolated area, the complainant alleged, the staffer touched her inappropriately.

The woman immediately reported the incident to airport security officers. Law enforcement officials reviewed CCTV footage from the terminal and subsequently registered a criminal case against the accused under Section 75(1)(i) of the BNS, which deals with sexual assault through non-consensual touching.

The accused has been remanded in police custody.
