Ayodhya case: Charges in July

LUCKNOW: The special CBI court, hearing the Ayodhya demolition cases, today fixed July 23 for framing of charges against all the 49 accused including Union ministers L K Advani and Uma Bharati and UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh. Additional sessions judge J P Srivastava directed that in view of the stay granted by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court till July 20, the matter would be heard on July 23.

Jailbreak bid

JAMMU: EleVEN Pakistani detainees tried to escape from the Kotbhalwal jail, about ten km from here, by digging a tunnel in which one of them died of asphyxiation early today. At least ten security personnel who tried to stop them were injured in stone-pelting by the prisoners.

Ghose murder

NEW DELHI: The CBI today chargesheeted 11 people including commander-in-chief of the outlawed ULFA for allegedly abducting social activist Sanjoy Ghose in Assam about two years ago for the purpose of killing8217;. The chargesheet filed in aGuwahati court named ULFA commander Paresh Baruah among others, a CBI release said.

Lucknow violence

LUCKNOW: Six persons, including a policeman, were injured when two sects of Muslims clashed over taking out of a procession in the walled city area here today. Trouble started when people belonging to a sect of Muslims took out a procession in Thakurganj locality of the walled city and the other objected to it, State Principal Secretary home V K Mittal told reporters here. The rival groups clashed pelting stones at each other in which an SHO and five others were injured.

New Goa speaker

PANAJI: Former chief minister Pratapsinh Rane of the ruling Congress was today elected speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, defeating Vishwas Satarkar of BJP. The motion supporting Rane8217;s candidature was carried with 25 votes in favour and ten against. Four MGP members abstained from voting.
