Hyderabad batsman VVS Laxman returned to his hometown today after playing a significant role in India’s win in Pakistan. ‘‘The tour was excellent from the word go. It was a classical example of what combined team effort can do. The people of Pakistan showered a lot of warmth and affection on us. It was good to see love and friendship take centrestage and see rivalry take the backseat,’’ said Laxman.
Laxman stressed on the team’s batting strength as the chief factor that took India past Pakistan, saying, ‘‘The key to our success was our batting. It was not that just one batsman contributing. Yuvraj played a brilliant knock at Lahore, Viru got a triple hundred, Sachin made a classic 194 and Rahul (270) played one of the best innings of his career.”
The other person Laxman took time out to mention was old warhorse Anil Kumble. ‘‘He is our main strike bowler. He took the responsibility and bowled his heart out. Pathan and Balaji chipped in by taking useful wickets at crucial junctures. In the Multan Test, on a perfect batting strip our bowlers performed admirably to take 20 wickets.’’
On Sehwag’s triple century, Laxman said, ‘‘It was a treat to watch Sehwag get the triple hundred, the first Indian to do so. But the best thing was his knock enabled us to win the game. I am not at all disappointed that Viru overtook my record. It was thrilling every minute.’’
About the surprise Indian star of the tour, Laxman says, ‘‘Balaji bowled a good line and length. He performed well in the one-dayers too. He is a much improved bowler from the time he played in Australia.’’
The stylish right-hander, who got married just before the Pakistan tour, said about having wife Shailaja in Pakistan: “It was good company. It is always good to have your companion with you on a tour of this nature. We enjoyed the tour.’’
