8226; This refers to the reports 8216;Dismay in Delhi over America8217;s Pak blinkers8217; and 8216;The billion reasons why US can squeeze Pakistan 8212; if it wishes8217;. They demand two immediate questions, as far as India is concerned. Does India need advice from the US and Russia to tackle what its faces? And how long does our leadership want to procrastinate before making Pakistan understand the costs of misbehaving? Or, as Winston Churchill famously put it, are we 8220;determined to be indeterminate and have resolved to be irresolute8221;? Had India taken prompt action, let us say on November 29, after the lone surviving terrorist Kasab was caught, the rest of the world would have understood India8217;s agony. Instead, we are still assessing the situation.

Voter8217;s victory

8226; The all-round success of elections in Jammu and Kashmir is a testimony that the wheels of democracy may turn slowly but in the end they deliver results. In this contest, the real winners are the people of J038;K and of course the Election Commission too can appropriate a large measure of the credit. It was the EC8217;s decision to hold elections and be business-like about it.

Take a bow

8226; The elections held in J038;K were free and fair and by and large peaceful against the backdrop of the 8220;proxy war8221; by extremists in the state and elsewhere in the country. Due credit should be given to the Election Commission, the security forces and army personnel and to our political leaders. The decision of the Kashmiris to vote, given the possibility of terror or attacks from separatist elements, has shown the real nature of democracy in India.

Centre-ground

8226; The J038;K election results indicate that the middle path is the one that the majority of people in J038;K prefer, going by the total number of seats won by the National Conference and the Congress. Unity will be achieved when the separatists are derecognised by the people of Kashmir. After these results, India should not entertain political players who will still encourage separation.

It8217;s the NC

8226; This refers to the editorial 8216;Now, govern8217;. In the larger interests of the state and democracy, the Congress should extend unequivocal support to the National Conference for the formation of the new J038;K government. The fractured electoral verdict may not indicate the outright rejection of the 8216;Azadi8217; demand; however it does not point towards the opposite either as can be seen from the performance of the PDP and the NC. This time, people at large have opted for solutions to the basic problems faced by them in their daily life.
