SAS NAGAR, SEPT 14: Keeping in view the increasing number of fatal road accidents in the township, the local police have created two no-overtaking zones. The stretches of roads between UT barrier and Balongi chowk and from Magu light point to Phase XI, which passes through Phase I, Industrial Area, Phases IV, III-B-2, VII, VIII, IX and X, have been declared as No Overtaking zones.

SAS Nagar Superintendent of Police B.S. Randhawa told Newsline that about 10 sign boards had been erected on these roads and anyone found overtaking would be challaned.

He said that in compliance of the Punjab and Haryana High Court directive in the traffic regulation and pollution control case, 38 people had been booked for traffic violations till this afternoon.

According to police sources, 13 persons were challaned on Sunday; three for using black films, eight for riding without helmets and jumping red lights, one auto-rickshaw was impounded and one for tripple-riding.

On Monday, 10 were challaned; six for riding without helmets and jumping red lights, one for pollution and using pressure horn and three vehicles were impounded for being driven without documents.

Till today afternoon, 15 persons were challaned; two vehicles were impounded, three were challaned for driving without licence and 10 for riding without helmets, jumping red lights and being without pollution certificates.

Sources added that auto-rickshaw and private bus owners had been requested by the district administration to provide dress and name badges for their drivers and conductors.
