MoD to honour martyrs with `Badge of Sacrifice’
In a unique gesture, the Ministry of Defence honoured the next of kin of gallant soldiers from Maharashtra and Gujarat who laid down their lives for the nation in the post-independence era with a "Badge of Sacrifice" at simultaneous functions held here and at Ahmedabad. The badges, along with certificates, were presented to the kin of 10 out of 23 armymen from Mumbai, Thane, Dhule and Nasik by Major General A R Kumar on Thursday which coincided with "Vijay Diwas".
Kumar said the badges were simultaneously given in different parts of the country to the kin of all those who sacrificed their lives for independent India since 1947. Out of a total of 17,000 martyrs, the kin of most were to get the symbolic badges on Thursday while the rest would be given on February 15, 2000. The list of martyrs includes those who sacrificed their lives in the recent Kargil intrusion by mercenaries backed by the Pakistani Army as well as various counter-insurgencyoperations conducted by the Army such as Operation Rakshak, Operation Pawan and Operation Hifazat.
Smoking ban a policy decision: HC
The Bombay High Court on Thursday suggested that the Maharashtra Government take a policy decision on banning smoking at public places in the state.
Disposing of a public interest litigation (PIL) urging for a ban on smoking at public places, the bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabrahwal observed that the High Court could not issue such orders and that it was for the Government to formulate a policy in this regard.
The PIL, filed by social worker Sujata Chakravorty, submitted that 10 million people in India died because of diseases caused due to smoking such as cancer, tuberculosis and lung ailments. Passive smoking was even more harmful, her counsel, S P Bharati argued.
Man throws stone at judge’s house
Police have arrested a person for indulging in stone throwing at the residence of a Bombay High Court Judge at Malabar Hill thisafternoon.
According to the police, the incident took place around 2:30 pm when 45-year-old Vaignath Singh threw a stone at justice S S Parkar’s residence at New Rocky Hill in south Mumbai.
The stone smashed the glass pane at the first floor residence alarming the family members, the police added.
The police are yet to ascertain the reason for the attack .
