Shandilya wins, Shroff loses
MUMBAI: Indian cuiests met with mixed luck at the World Snooker championship at Papua New Guinea on Wednesday. According to information received here, National champion Ashok Shandilya shocked World under-21 champion Rodney Goggins 4-3, while India number two Sarang Shroff lost to 21-year-old Noppadon Sangnil of Thailand 1-4 in their league matches. Shandilya had earlier lost a cliff-hanger against Chung Ming Hung of Chinese Taipei 3-4.

Kumble rested
VADODARA: Leading Indian wicket-taker spinner Anil Kumble has been rested from the two One-day International against New Zealand and will be replaced by Gyanendra Pandey, BCCI secretary JY Lele said.

Ford backs Narain
NEW DELHI: Racing driver Narain Karthikeyan received a much-needed boost as Ford India Limited decided to sponsor him in two races later in the month in Asia. Under the sponsorship agreement, Karthikeyan will race with Stewart Racing, owned by Jackie Stewart, one of Formula One8217;s all-time great. The sponsorship will cover the November 21 Macau World Cup and a November 28 event in Seoul. Karthikeyan8217;s other sponsors are SIEL, Brakes India, Rane Madras Limited, King Fisher, Mobil 1, Tata and JK Tyres.

Course for coaches
CHENNAI: An International volleyball coaches course Level-I will be held here from November 12-24. 25 delegates from Japan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and India will attend the course.

The International volleyball federation FIVB has deputed Dr Zdenek Valasak Czech and Ebrahim Khosrow Iran as course director and course instructor respectively.

Punjab Police up
CHANDIGARH: Parminder Singh Sr scored 42 points to steer Punjab Police into the semi-final of the 16th Federation Cup basketball championship in Jalandhar today. In a league match, Punjab Police defeated Indian Bank, Tamil Nadu 83-59. The policemen meet Railways, while Army take on Indian Bank. Railways today outpointed Maharashtra 87-47.

In the women8217;s section, MP meet AP, while Punjab take on Kerala. Punjab recorded an easy 82-52 win over Railways.
