Tendulkar, Donald top Coopers

NEW DELHI: Sachin Tendulkar has pipped West Indian Brian Lara to the top spot for batting in the recently published Coopers and Lybrand Cricket Ratings for Test cricketers.

Other Indian batsmen finding a place in the top 30 include Navjot Siddhu (14), Saurav Ganguly (15) and Mohammed Azharuddin (17).

Allan Donald topped the bowling, becoming the first South African since 1970 to top the Coopers and Lybrand Ratings. Anil Kumble entered the top 10, and Javagal Srinath is at 16.

IOB victorious

KANHANGAD: Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, scored a 15-5, 15-11, 15-9 victory over Cochin Navy in the men’s section of the third leg Pre-Federation Cup Volleyball Tournament here late last night.

Indian Railways take on Tamil Nadu Youth in the women’s section, while Cochin Port Trust will meet United Club, Punjab, in the men’s section on Tuesday.

National hockey

NEW DELHI: Chennai will host the 49th Senior Women’s National Hockey Championship inAugust.

Indian Women Hockey Federation (IWHF) president Vidya Stokes said here today that championship will be played from August 1 to 10.

She said all the affiliated units of the IWHF are likely to take part in the nationals. Railways are the defending champions.

Obaidullah Cup

BHOPAL: The All India Obaidullah Khan Gold Cup hockey tournament will be held here from October 2. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the ad-hoc committee of the timing of the tournament has been changed from May-June to October this year due to heavy schedule and involvement of top hockey players of the country in international events during the summer season.
