BIRMINGHAM, June 6: A moment of good fortune for South Africa’s Daryll Cullinan kept third-day honours even in the first Test against England at Edgbaston today.

After a rain-delayed start, South Africa were 88 for two at tea in reply to England’s first innings of 462. The South Africans were 192 for five at close of play.

Having lost both openers for 38, South Africa were rebuilding at 73 for two when Cullinan advanced two yards down the wicket and tried to slog off-spinner Robert Croft over mid-wicket.

Hopelessly stranded, Cullinan turned around to see England captain and wicketkeeper Alec Stewart removing the bails.

Umpire David Shepherd called for a television replay which showed that Stewart had missed the ball.
