CHENNAI, MARCH 7: The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, has recognised the Diplomate of the National Board DNB training in general surgery.
Talking to mediapersons on Monday, National Board of Examinations NBE president A Rajasekaran said the Council of the Royal College has agreed to hold joint examinations of FRCS and DNB in India, side by side. This would elevate the stature of DNB degrees in India and abroad.
The Royal College has also hinted that similar examinations for DNB and FRCS in paediatric surgery and urology could be conducted. While the present pattern of DNB would continue, the joint examination would be available for those who desire to get DNB and FRCS.
The NBE aims at providing opportunities to Indian students in various sub-speciality areas in centres having high-tech equipment. This scheme would help reverse brain drain, he said.
The Board, after an inspection of the facilities and the faculty, accredit institutions for training. All-India examinations are held for primary PG courses. With the recent decision of the Board, a student can apply for the primary examination of the Board even during the internship period.
The courses are conducted at Government and private medical colleges by experts, with trained manpower and up-to-date teaching facilities.
In Chennai, Apollo Hospitals, VHS Medical Centre, Vijaya Hospital, Sankara Netrayala, Southern Railway Hospital, Child Trust Hospital, Tamilnad Hospitals and K J Hospital are the post-graduate training institutions recognised by the National Board, he added.
The NBE is an autonomous organisation set up 25 years ago under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The Board awards the DNB in 37 specialities, including superspecialities.
