Curfew was clamped in Mandya and four towns of the district for three days after farmers turned violent and allegedly attacked police over the release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu.
Thousands of baton-wielding farmers went on the rampage, setting fire to government vehicles and fighting pitched battles with policemen. Many were injured. Pandavapura, Srirangapatna, Maddur and K.M. Doddi are the other towns under curfew.
CRA order holds till Oct

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu will have to approach the Centre if it wants Karnataka to continue releasing water on ‘‘distress sharing’’ basis after October 31. Karnataka won’t be bound by the September 3 SC order next month as the CRA order was only for September and October. The SC order will now be focussed on the ‘‘past record’’ of water release by Karnataka for various periods of the year. From November, Karnataka will have to abide by the interim order of the Tribunal, where the quantity of water to be released will be much less. (ENS) |
There was trouble for Chief Minister S.M. Krishna on the political front as well. In Bangalore, Mandya MP Ambareesh said he was resigning in protest. ‘‘It is part of my commitment to the people. Hundreds of protesters led by K.S. Puttaniah were arrested as they marched to the Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir. Farmers also pitched tents on the Kabini riverbed to prevent release of water from the reservoir. In Mandya town, Raitha Hitharakshana Samiti president G. Made Gowda and legislators M.S. Athmananda, M.S. Sidharaju and G.B. Shivakumar were arrested.
Farmers from Hindvalu, who arrived in Mandya on bullock carts, blocked all roads to the town. Stone-pelting forced police to run for cover at various places.
Bus services between Mysore and Bangalore were diverted through K.R. Nagar and Channarayapatna. Train services between Mysore and Bangalore were suspended.
