
The CBI has filed a supplementary chargesheet against Aftab Ansari, mafia leader who was deported to Delhi from Dubai in February, naming him as the prime conspirator in the Santhalpur explosive case. This was the main case pending against Aftab Ansari and it names Omar Sheikh as the other key conspirator.
The three-page chargesheet was filed in the Radhanpur court in the Patan district of Gujarat on May 10. According to the chargesheet, Aftab corroborated the findings that he had 8216;8216;directed his contacts8217;8217; belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba LeT and Harkat-ul-Jehadi-Islami HUJI, to push through the consignment to his gang in the last week of October.
The consignment intercepted on October 26, 2001, contained, among other explosive material, 18 kgs of RDX, 2 AK 56 rifles, 524 AK 56 cartridges, 2 pistols, 296 pistol cartridges, 4 IED remote controls and 10 electronic detonators.
This consignment was to be taken over by Asif Raza Khan, who was killed in an encounter with the Gujarat police, and utilised for sabotage activities in Delhi and adjoining areas. Aftab also intended to use them for abducting some rich people Delhi and Bhopal. Aftab has been booked under various Sections of the IPC, including hatching conspiracy under the Arms and Explosive Act.
Referring to Aftab8217;s key role in the aborted attempt, a senior CBI officer said Omar Sheikh was supplying arms, ammunition and explosives to Aftab. In the chargesheet, the CBI has also cited e-mails exchanged between Aftab and one Aquib on the arms consignment deals. This is the first time the CBI has presented e-mails as evidence before a court.
