DHARAMSALA, Jan 7: The unconcerned attitude of the Himachal Pradesh Education Board authorities to the declining standard of Sanskrit books prescribed for the govt schools has upset scholars of the subject who say that the repeated reminders to rectify the grammatical as well as printers8217; errors have fallen on deaf ears.

The books which are quot;full of mistakesquot; will be taught in the new academic session too, teachers of Sanskrit said. These books are being taught in Class VI, VIII and X since 1992. Dr Baldev Raj, secretary of the Himachal Pradesh Government Sanskrit Teacher8217;s Association, said: quot;Since 1992 we have been urging the board authorities to take necessary measures to rectify the errors and not make mockery of the ancient languagequot;.

He added that the board authorities had failed to take notice of their pleas and the difficulties both teachers and students had been facing because of the mistakes.

When contacted, Chairman of the HP Education Board Chaman Lal Gupta turned the tables on the Sanskrit teachers saying: quot; The Sanskrit Teacher8217;s Association is itself a divided house. I am prepared to bring out error-free Sanskrit books provided these teachers come out with the particular errors existing in the books and make corrections.quot; He said the board was even ready to make suitable payments for their services. He blamed the teachers for not pointing out mistakes and raising an unnecessary hue and cry over the printer8217;s devil. The Chairman further informed ENS that he was going to constitute a committee which would take care of such unwanted errors.

He said this committee would start work in February. A panel of four or five teachers would be put on proof-reading and academic jobs, so that the Sanskrit books being introduced from the next session could be error-free.
