After a video widely shared on social media showed an SUV being driven rashly on GT Karnal Bypass Road, the Delhi Police on Tuesday said a 21-year-old man, who was allegedly driving the vehicle, has been arrested and the black Scorpio N seen in the clip has been seized.
In response to a post flagging risk to public safety due to the alleged rash driving, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta wrote on X, “A case has been registered under BNS and Motor Vehicle Act at Samaypur Badli police station. Offending vehicle, Scorpio, has been seized. Driver has been arrested who is a student of IGNOU. (sic)”
According to the police, the video surfaced on Sunday, showing the SUV being driven in a zig-zag manner on the National Highway-44, also known as GT Karnal Bypass Road, towards Narela in Outer Delhi. The vehicle with tinted windows had the name “Dawood” written on the backside.
Taking cognisance of the footage, police teams from the Outer North district traced and intercepted the vehicle the same day. The driver was identified as Daud Ansari (21), a resident of Okhla in Southeast Delhi.
Police said the vehicle is registered in the name of his father, Musafir Ansari. The driving licence of the accused was verified and taken on record.
After examining the viral video and other material evidence, an FIR was registered on Monday at Samaypur Badli police station under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash driving and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The accused was arrested and the Scorpio-N was impounded as per procedure, police said, adding that further investigation is underway.
