The Delhi Police on Tuesday said they were investigating a complaint of assault and caste-based abuse at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Polytechnic after a video posted on social media appeared to show a member of the polytechnic faculty kicking an individual inside a classroom.
“On the complaint of Shri Ramphool Meena (an upper division clerk at the polytechnic) against Associate Professor Riyazzudin in the Department of Civil Engineering, a case vide FIR no. 33/26 under Sections 3(1)(r) of The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and 115(2) the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 (BNS) has been registered at Jamia Nagar police station and investigation has been taken up,” DCP (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said in a statement late Tuesday.
Section 3(1)(r) of the SC-ST Act deals with “intentional insult or intimidation with intent to humiliate a member of a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe in any place within public view”. Section 115 of BNS deals with “voluntarily causing hurt”.
Police said the complaint was filed on January 19 alleging “physical manhandling and assault”, “use of caste-based slurs and abuses toward the victim”, and “a physical scuffle occurring on the premises”. It is learnt that the alleged incident took place on January 16.
Police “strictly clarified” that “the complainant had made no allegations regarding any attempt at forceful conversion”, and that “any reports or social media posts suggesting a conversion angle are factually incorrect and baseless”.
Meanwhile, JMI’s official spokesperson told PTI, “We have not received any formal complaint in relation to any physical altercation or any caste-based incident from our employee.”
