MANCHESTER, AUGUST 3: England made the perfect start in the rain-affected third Test against West Indies at Old Trafford on Thursday as they reduced the tourists to 21 for two at lunch.

Sherwin Campbell’s only scoring shot was an attempted flick through midwicket off Darren Gough’s opening over, the ball coming off a thick edge and squeezing past point.

Campbell fell two overs later with just three on the board, Graham Thorpe taking a sharp tumbling catch at third slip as the batsman played back to Gough but failed to get over the ball.

Caddick, meanwhile, was worrying Adrian Griffith at the other end, swinging the ball into the left-hander and then cutting it across him. Caddick got his man to make it 12 for two as he rapped Griffith on the front pad with another big inswinger.

Brian Lara, declared fit following a nagging hamstring injury, joined Wavell Hinds and survived an appeal for lbw first ball as the bowlers continued to dominate.

Lara, who scored 145 when the sides met here five years ago but still saw his team lose, took 19 deliveries to get off the mark, edging Gough through the vacant fourth-slip area for four. Gough then shaved the off sump as Lara played and missed. The players were forced off by light rain just before lunch, with 13 overs bowled.

England had made four changes from the second test, sacrificing Graeme Hick on Thursday morning after opting to include off-spinner Robert Croft.

Thorpe beat Hick to the sixth batting slot, while opening batsman Marcus Trescothick was given his debut and captain Nasser Hussain returned from a thumb injury. Hick, Nick Knight and Mark Ramprakash as well as pace bowler Matthew Hoggard missed out after playing in England’s victory at Lord’s.

West Indies made one change, with batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan replacing the injured Shivnarine Chanderpaul (elbow tendon). Veteran pace bowlers Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh were re-united after both missing the recently-completed triangular one-day series with England and Zimbabwe.

The five-match series stands at 1-1.
