NEW DELHI, March 25: The Union Commerce Ministry has restrained the pharmaceutical major, Ranbaxy, from using the Beagles for experiments.
In a notice served on the firm on Monday, the Ministry has demanded to know why the company did not obtain the clearance for medical experiments from the designated committee of the Ministry of Environment and Forests before importing the dogs. The Beagles will now have to be sent back to quarantine.
Meanwhile, animal lover Maneka Gandhi has demanded that the Beagles be handed over to the animal lovers who could afford to raise the imported dogs.
Maneka had stated that the permission from the ministry had been obtained based on the clearance awarded by the Chief Wildlife Warden CWW of Delhi. The CWW in turn had clarified that his office had only stated that the Beagles do not fall within their purview.
In another strong reaction to the Express Newsline report that the beagles were to be subjected to cruel medical experiments, a Veterinary Surgeon at theAmerican Veterinary Centre and a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association AVMA, Dr Rajesh Kapuria, has blamed the virtually defunct Animal Welfare Cell for the situation.
quot;We condemn the use of Animals for non-meaningful research. If Ranbaxy is doing some meaningful research then it should get the consent of Indian Veterinary Medical Association IVMA and can do the research only under it8217;s strict supervisionquot;. Adding that the committee under the central government is hardly effective he said that several people at the American Veterinary Centre are ready to adopt the Beagles.
Earlier, the Union Commerce Secretary Prabhu said they had also asked the ministry of environment to send them the details on its committee and the procedure, so that recurrence of such incidents could be avoided.
