CHANDIGARH, Aug 18: Veteran Congress leader Daulat Ram Sharma was cremated today in the Sector 25 cremation grounds. His son Purshottam Sharma lit the pyre. The cremation was attended by a number of local leaders and social workers.

A large number of leaders of the Congress and other political parties condoled the death and expressed shock at the demise of Sharma.

A large number of political leaders attended the funeral, including local MP Satya Pal Jain, CTCC chief Pawan Kumar Bansal, Mayor Gian Chand Gupta, Haryana Congress chief Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Punjab Congress leaders Sant Ram Singla and Tej Parkash Singh, former Union minister Venod Sharma, besides former MP Harmohan Dhawan and JD president Surinder Bhardwaj.

Adviser to the UT Administrator, Jagdish Sagar, Deputy Commissioner R. K. Rao and IGP R. P. Singh also attended the funeral. Rao laid a wreath on the body on behalf of the UT Administrator Lt. Gen. B. K. N. Chhibber (retd).

Meanwhile, among the large number of political leaders condoling the demise of Sharma, Haryana Congress chief Bhupinder Singh Hooda paid glowing tributes to the departed leader. He also expressed his sympathy with the bereaved family.

Samajwadi Janata Party leaders, Harmohan Dhawan and Devinder Singh Babla, president of Samajwadi Party, Shivi Jaiswal, president of Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association G. C. Dhuriwala and Janata Party president Ajay Jagga also condoled his death.

Chandigarh Territorial Congress (Seva Dal) president Parampal Singh Matharoo, Punjab Congress Chandigarh Project president P. R. Kaharpuri, Muslim Welfare Society president Khalil Ahmed, SC/ST Welfare Federation president Amar Nath Sarhadi and Maharishi Balmiki Bhawan Committee president K. S. Raju were among others who condoled Sharma’s death.

Rajiv Wool Market, Sector 38 remained closed as a mark of respect to Sharma.
