PUNE, Sept 11: Shreyas Hegde steered Dastur High School (Boys) to an overwhelming victory over Abhinav Vidyalaya 29-9 to earn a berth in the semi-finals of the senior section of the Pune Schools Amateur Athletics Association (PSAAA) basketball tournament at their home courts today.

Dastur boys were all tuned up and right from the start began scoring in quick succession. Their charge was spearheaded by the athletic Shreyas who excelled in his dribbling.

His shooting skills were apparent from the attempts he took at the rivals basket which were converted into valuable points. Murtuza Hussain too played well to support Shreyas and scored quite a few three pointers to tally eight points to his credit. Vishal Jagtap contributed five points.

The losing side — Abhinav were off-colour and hardly offered any resistance. They lacked combination and most of their shooting attempts went astray. Amit Ramgude with four points and Kunal with three points reduced the margin for the losers.

The evening session which figured, Shikshan Prasarak Mandali (English) and J.N Petit in the senior section turned out to be a dull affair. The match all throughout was low-standard and never created any excitement. Neither teams played a spirited game. This was again evident from the low score result which saw just 15 points (9-6) logged on the scoreboard in aggregate.

SPM (English) turned up as the fortunate victors, winning by three points which was sheer luck than caliber basketball which won them the tie.

Suyash Adhav was the main architect of the win, leading the scorers table with eight points — which indicates that he won the match single handedly for SPM. Earlier, S.M Choksey also entered the semi-finals defeating S.D Kataria 16-11 in the junior section. Points were rapidly scored in the first half for the winners and they piled up a 10-4 lead at the half-way stage.

After the lemon break, S.D Kataria made a valiant attempt to stage a comeback which did materalise to some extent as they managed to out-point the eventual winners, but was not enough to upset the apple-cart of Choksey lads.

For the winners Arprit Shah, Chirag Jain and Amir Tambe chipped in with four points apiece.
