A simple coffee run in Argentina turned into a heartwarming travel memory for a Mumbai-based investor, reminding many online that it’s often the smallest moments that define a journey abroad.
Basant Maheshwari, a well-known Indian equity investor, author, and portfolio manager, recently shared an anecdote on X from his visit to Ushuaia, often called the world’s southernmost city. Maheshwari wrote that no matter which country he is in, he prefers stepping out to buy his coffee instead of having the complimentary one at his hotel, a habit that unexpectedly paid off this time.
During one such walk, he entered a local café in Ushuaia and was immediately greeted by an unusual sight: a dog sitting inside. Maheshwari wrote, “Irrespective of the country, I always go out to buy my coffee rather than have it free in the hotel. Here in Ushuaia, as I walked into a cafe, there was a dog sitting inside and I am scared of dogs. The owner, an ever friendly Argentinian, asked me to come in and sit down. As I sat, I asked him about the dog in English and he translated it for me in Spanish. And when he knew I am from India, he put on Bollywood songs on YouTube. Wonderful!”

Local cafes always give you authentic insights – just like how street-level research beats fancy reports when picking stocks. Hope you conquered the dog fear for that Argentinian coffee!”
