The Communist Party of India Marxist has undertaken a long march involving thousands of tribals and farmers from all tehsils of Palghar district to press for what it described as several burning and long pending demands including full implementation of the Forest Rights Act and the Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas Act PESA.

The march which began from Charoti in Dahanu tehsil on Monday is on its way to the Palghar district collectorate where it will reach today.

“The marchers will stage indefinite dharna at the Palghar Collectorate until the government accepts our burning and long pending demands in writing along with a definite time bound assurance for their implementation,” Communist Party of India Marxist leader Ashok Dhawale who is also national president of the All India Kisan Sabha said.

According to the CPI(M) the demands include vesting of all temple inaam and government land in the name of actual tillers restoration and strengthening of MGNREGA cancellation of the smart meter scheme repeal of the four Labour Codes and scrapping of the proposed Wadhwan and Murbe port projects.

The party said the participants in the march include farmers, agricultural workers, tribals, women and students from across Palghar district.

Organisations participating in the march include All India Kisan Sabha Centre of Indian Trade Unions All India Democratic Women’s Association Democratic Youth Federation of India Students’ Federation of India and Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch.

The CPI(M) said the mobilisation reflects growing discontent among tribal and rural communities over land rights employment and large infrastructure projects in the district.
