
Candidates debarred from contesting polls for 3 yrs
GANDHINAGAR: The Election Commission has 8220;disqualified8221; 13 candidates, who had contested the last Lok Sabha election from Gujarat, and debarred them from contesting any election for the next three years for failing to file accounts of their election expenses.
The candidates are Tapubhai Patabhai Khuman, Jamalbhai Alarakhbhai Sorathiya, Jayantibhai Bachubhai Solanki, Maganlal Damijibhai Kakania, Popatbhai Mohanbhai Jasoliya, Pravinkumar Chaturpuri Goswami, Jayantilal Gordhan Shingala, Labhshankar Ramjibhai Barad, Sureshbhai Jamsingbhai Rathava, Motibhai Varsinhbhai Hathila, Mohanbhai Kanjibhai Ninama, Daxesh Chandrakantbhai Moti and Amit Vyas.
Sharad Joshi fast postponed
NAGPUR: Shetkari Sanghatana chief Sharad Joshi has postponed his indefinite fast in support of higher guarantee price for wheat. The local Sanghatana claimed that the indefinite fast was postponed following an appeal of the Kisan Co-ordination Committee in this regard. Joshi and his followers, a sizeable section from Vidarbha, are demanding price of Rs 650 per quintal as minimum guarantee price. Meanwhile, Prime Minister I K Gujral has invited CM Manohar Joshi for a discussion on the issue in New Delhi on May 16.
Rural service mandatory for MP docs
BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh has decided to make it compulsory for its doctors to serve in rural areas for atleast three years. The State health minister, Premnarayan Thakur, said about 2300 out of the 7000 odd doctors had never worked in rural areas. The State govt has already made it obligatory for medical college students to execute bonds at the time of admission to serve rural areas for a minimum period of three years after completion of their studies.
Compensation for accident victims
AHMEDABAD: A division bench of the Gujarat High Court has ordered compensation of Rs 50 lakh to 26 people killed at the Alag Shipbreakers Yard on the Saurashtra Coast in accidents. The division bench comprising acting Chief Justice R A Mehta and Justice R K Abhichandani in their order directed that the dependents of each deceased be paid Rs 50,000 as an ex-gratia of which Rs 19,000 be paid to the relatives. The division bench ordered that the first installment must be paid by May 15 while the second installment must be paid by June nine.
Goa bans sale of non-iodised salt
PANAJI: The government of Goa has prohibited the sale of edible common salt other than iodised salt within the State with effect from August 15. A notification under Section seven clause four of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, has been issued to this effect by director of Food and Drugs Administration.
