ALGIERS, Jan 6: Another 180 people have been massacred in Algeria, reports said today, continuing the latest wave of bloodshed in the nearly six-year insurgency.

Newspapers in the capital reported 172 people killed yesterday in three separate massacres in the country’s west and in an ambush on a bus south of Algiers.

Hospital officials said four small girls were killed in the region of Ain Defla, 120 km southwest of Algiers, and that their mother was kidnapped.

Since insurgency began at least 200 girls and young women are believed to have been kidnapped by Islamic militants. Many have subsequently been found dead, often several months pregnant.
