Life can be hectic, and stress can accumulate without us even realising it. If you often feel overwhelmed by your emotions and feelings, it is necessary for you to sit with them. According to psychologist Vishnupriya Bhagirath, checking in with ourselves is essential for maintaining our mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
“Understanding your emotions, thoughts, and reactions helps you make better decisions, manage stress, and improve your relationships,” she said.
Gayatri Kasturi, Counselling Psychologist at Lissun, agreed that by checking in with yourself, you can evaluate your emotional condition. “Recognising and admitting your feelings is the first step towards good emotion management. It allows you to respond to circumstances more calmly and rationally,” she added.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the frequency of self-check-ins. It is determined by the individual’s preferences, needs, and way of life, according to Kasturi. However, here are some ways you can do it easily.
Mindfulness meditation
Set aside a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness meditation, Bhagirath advised. “Sit quietly, focus on your breath, and observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment.” This practice helps you become more aware of your emotional state, reduces stress, and enhances your ability to stay present in the moment.
Journaling
According to Kasturi, keeping a journal allows you to express your ideas, feelings, and experiences. You develop a better understanding of yourself by writing down your emotions, struggles, and accomplishments. “It can result in improved problem-solving skills and a sense of catharsis,” she added.
Body scan
This technique helps you identify and release physical stress, leading to improved relaxation and overall well-being, Bhagirath explained. “Take a few minutes to perform a body scan. Close your eyes and mentally scan your body from head to toe, paying attention to any physical sensations or areas of tension.”
Creative activity
According to Kasturi, a study conducted in 2011 showed that young people can benefit from a creative approach to mindfulness that can teach them emotional regulation, and social and coping skills, and that can improve aspects of their self-awareness, self-esteem, and resilience.
“Engaging in creative activities is not only a fun way to spend time, but it is also a powerful approach to reconnect with yourself and promote general well-being. Art, writing, music, and crafts provide several benefits that aid in self-discovery and personal growth,” she said.
Seeking solitude in nature
Being outside in nature may be calming and grounding, lowering tension and fostering relaxation, Kasturi explained. It allows you to unplug from the stresses of everyday life and reconnect with yourself on a deeper level.
“Spend time in nature, whether it’s a stroll through the park, a hike in the mountains or simply sitting by a lake. Disconnect from distractions and immerse yourself in nature,” she said.
Remember that the purpose of self-check-ins is to develop a healthy and lasting habit of self-awareness rather than to impose needless pressure. Adjust the frequency to what seems comfortable for you, and remember to be kind and understanding with yourself during this process.
