Juhi Parmar shares a DIY lip scrub recipe. (Pic source: Instagram/Juhi Parmar)Your lips deserve the same care and attention as the rest of your skin. But, while we use moisurisers, toners, and various other products on our skin, we tend to forget our lips. However, that is not the right way to go about it, as it can lead to dry, dull, and chapped lips.
“Dry, cracked lips can be uncomfortable, unsightly, and even painful at times. The good news is that there are some natural and easy solutions to help combat this issue: a DIY lip scrub. Not only is it affordable and customizable, but it also ensures you know exactly what’s going on your delicate lips,” said Dr Monica Chahar, Chief Dermatologist & Director- Skin Décor, New Delhi.
As such, to help you make a start when it comes to lip care, Juhi Parmar took to Instagram to share a simple DIY lip scrub that, she said, will make your lips “brighter and lighter.” “With the summer setting in, our body too goes through changes due to the heat. I’m back with #Sundaypampering with a natural homemade lip scrub out of beetroot and almond oil.” wrote the actor.
She continued, “It helps in making your lips brighter and lighter, nourishes the lips, and also helps in removing dead skin cells and preventing chapped lips. A great mositurizer, it’s super easy and great for nourishment. So enjoy your Sunday, and pamper yourself because itna toh banta hai after a hard working week!”

How to use the DIY lip scrub:
Scrub very gently on the lips for couple of minutes
But are such scrubs effective?
Speaking with indianexpress.com, Dr Kalpana Sarangi, Senior Consultant, Cosmetic Dermatologist, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital said, “The skin on our lips is extremely delicate, so it’s important to treat it gently in order to maintain its natural softness and suppleness. Regular lip care can be as simple as gently massaging baby oil or mineral oil onto the lips, then wiping it off with a warm napkin. For those with particularly chapped lips, a gentle scrub may be used once a week, followed immediately by a soothing emollient to lock in moisture”.
Commenting on DIY lip scrubs, Dr Sarangi shared, “Though home-made scrubs are comparatively better than chemical based products, it’s always advisable to consult with your dermatologist before starting any new beauty regime. Also, with any scrub, it’s ideal to exfoliate your lips while being kind to your delicate skin. Just remember to follow it up with an emollient to nourish and protect your lips”.
According to her, an ideal DIY lip scrub should “remove dead skin cells, and leave your lips feeling smooth, soft, and refreshed”.

Decoding the ingredients
According to Dr Chahar, beetroot is a natural ingredient that’s rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. It’s great for the skin, especially the lips. “Beetroot helps to improve blood circulation, which gives the lips a natural plump look. Its natural pink tint is also a bonus, giving your lips a subtle and natural colour. Sweet almond oil is a gentle and nourishing oil that’s perfect for the delicate skin on our lips. It helps to moisturise and hydrate the lips, leaving them soft and supple. Lastly, sugar granules are excellent for exfoliating dead skin cells and revealing the smooth and soft lips underneath,” she told indianexpress.com.
She, however added it’s important to keep in mind that the effectiveness of the scrub may vary depending on the individual’s skin type, the frequency of use, and other factors such as overall diet and lifestyle habits. “So, always patch test on a small area of your lips first to ensure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients,” she suggested.
