“I’ve always thought of fitness as optional because my body has always been kind to me. But now I cannot imagine why I didn’t give back to it earlier. Women in your 40s, please start now. It’s the only thing that will keep you sane,” wrote Mathur on her Instagram Stories, alongside a video showcasing her performing an upper body workout.
The benefits of starting a fitness routine in your 40s extend beyond physical appearance, contended Varun Rattan, co-founder of The Body Science Academy. “It can improve insulin sensitivity and decrease inflammatory markers in our bodies. This can reduce the risk of conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Strength training can also promote bone formation and prevent conditions like osteoporosis,” said Rattan, who is also a certified nutrition coach.
While many people believe that muscle loss is a normal part of ageing, it can be prevented or even reversed with strength training, he added. “By increasing muscle mass, we can enhance our resting metabolic rate, the energy we use during rest. This can lead to more efficient fat burning over time,” Rattan noted.
Moreover, regular strength training can also boost women’s self-confidence. “Shifting the focus to gaining strength rather than shedding weight can be a healthier approach. Weight loss then becomes a beneficial side effect rather than the primary goal,” said Rattan.
No. Females generally have smaller muscle fibres, a lower concentration of type-II (fast-twitch) muscle fibres, and significantly less testosterone—an anabolic hormone—than men. Therefore, while some muscle hypertrophy might occur, resistance training is unlikely to result in an overly muscular appearance, Rattan elaborated.
Gym equipment can often seem daunting, and the fear of injury while lifting weights can be a deterrent, especially for individuals suffering from back, knee, or hip pain. “However, working with a qualified fitness professional can be an excellent solution. They can assess your movement patterns, correct any compensations, and teach you safe and appropriate weight-lifting techniques,” said Rattan.
