The Union Ministry of Education Wednesday advised schools to start classes early in the morning and reduce work hours to help students combat the heatwave sweeping many parts of the country. In an advisory, the ministry has also urged school authorities to restrict outdoor activities and ensure that students remain hydrated during school hours. Teaching and non-teaching staff should be trained to provide first aid to students in case of mild heat-stroke, it has said. "School hours may start early and get over before noon. Timing may be from 7.00 AM onwards. Number of school hours per day may be reduced," the advisory suggests. The advisory comes at a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a fresh spell of heatwave in Delhi from Friday. Most parts of north, central, northwest, and east India are struggling to cope due to soaring temperatures. The ministry has asked schools to relax norms regarding uniforms. "Students may be allowed to wear loose and light coloured cotton material dress. Schools may relax norms regarding uniforms such as neck ties. Canvas shoes may be allowed instead of leather shoes." reads the advisory. Schools have been directed to prepare robust first-aid facilities and ensure the availability of oral re-hydration solutions, and make arrangements for quick access to nearest health centres in cases of emergencies. The advisory also contains specific instructions on food, with teachers being advised to check the quality of mid-day meals before it is served to students. "Heat can spoil food therefore hot-cooked meals under PM POSHAN must be served hot and fresh. Children carrying tiffins may be advised not to carry food that can turn stale quickly.in every period, teachers should remind students to sip water from their water bottles," the advisory states. "While going back home, schools must ensure that students are carrying water in their bottles."
