The University of Punes (UoP) decision to tweak qualification parameters for candidates applying for the posts of Deputy and Assistant Registrars has triggered resentment.
After the government nod to fill 63 Class 1 and Class 2 posts vacant in the university, the varsity came out with advertisements last month, seeking applications for posts of Deputy and Assistant Registrar. There are seven posts for Deputy Registrar and 14 for Assistant Registrar that need to be filled.
The management council passed a resolution wherein a post graduate degree with at least 55 per cent marks or its equivalent grade of B in UGC 7 point scale was kept as qualification for applying to either post. An advertisement was published in newspapers, said a senior management council member, who did not wish to be named.
However, under pressure from certain vested interest groups, the parameters were changed to allow any person who has cleared post graduation to apply. Another ad changing the earlier parameters, was placed in newspapers, he added. University authorities deny any foul play or that they have come under any pressure to change the qualification.
It is true the earlier management council decided to put the minimum qualification as B. But after taking into consideration various aspects, another three-member committee was set up,headed by the vice-chancellor. It was this committee that decided to forgo the B grade condition, said UoP Registrar Narendra Kadu.
More than the qualification,it is the will to work that matters. High scores dont always ensure good performance. What we are looking for are people ready to put in their best for the university, he added.
However, one of the members of the committee told Newsline on condition of anonymity,Earlier,it was decided that Grade B should be the minimum qualification. There was a group that wanted the qualification to be B Plus,a notch higher than B. But then it was lowered to B and then ultimately it was decided that passing post graduation would be enough.
The lowering of qualification has not gone down well with many senior members of the university, who think it points towards disintegration of the system. This change was clearly done to appoint some people who are not worthy. On one hand the university is trying to secure a place in the list of top 100 universities and on the other, politics is being played out to fill important administrative posts. This is why the university is not able to achieve anything, despite having the best resources, said a top academic council member, who did not wish to be named.
