Pune: Teachers’ groups take out protests

Nearly 400-500 teachers had participated in the march from Shikshak Bhavan to Balbharati. The teachers put forward 108 demands to education commissioner Purushottam Bhapkar.

Three teachers’ organisations took out protest rallies in the city Monday, causing traffic snarls in some areas. One of the protests was organised by Maharashtra State Save Education Action Committee against a government resolution to hire ‘unpaid’ volunteers for arts and sports in place of regular teachers.

Nearly 400-500 teachers had participated in the march from Shikshak Bhavan to Balbharati. The teachers put forward 108 demands to education commissioner Purushottam Bhapkar.

The second protest was carried out by the Action Committee for Higher Education demanding the list of aided junior colleges. Committee members threatened to go on hunger strike from December 15 if the list wasn’t declared.

The third protest was organised by All India Socialist Teachers Association and led by social worker Dr Bhai Vaidya for correcting the faults in RTE.

The association pointed out that in the Economic Survey of 2014-15, Maharashtra had slid down from 8th to 13th position in education.

Various demands as giving the definition of excellence, uniform rules from KG to 12th standard and severe punishment for defaulters were made by the association.
