Phd norm: Tope promises review

Higher and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Tope has assured to look into the latest amendment to Maharashtra University Act that sets PhD as a criterion to become the member of any governing body of any state university.

Higher and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Tope has assured to look into the latest amendment to Maharashtra University Act that sets PhD as a criterion to become the member of any governing body of any state university.

A delegation of Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch (VVM) met Tope on Wednesday demanding a rethink on the amendment and the minister assured them that he would take up the issue in the forthcoming winter session in Nagpur.

The Governor had recently come up with an ordinance to amend the Act in which specific criteria were prescribed for the candidates who want to become member of governing bodies.

The amendment also says that one has to be a president or a secretary of an educational institute for 10 years to become a member of an executive body of any state university.

The Vikas Manch alleged that while making the amendments, the representatives of all sectors related to higher education were not taken into consideration.

It has also remarked that it would not be a democratic representation and certain sections will enjoy the monopoly. The VVM members who met Tope included Dhananjay Kulkarni,Rajesh Pande,A P Kulkarni and state general secretary of BJP Vinod Tawade.
