Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday walked out of the Arthur road jail on Wednesday, hours after being granted bail in a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The Sena MP and his aide, co-accused Pravin Raut, were produced before a special court today. Pravin, too, was granted bail. Later, the Enforcement Directorate moved Bombay High Court seeking an urgent stay on Raut’s bail, a matter that was refused by the Bench and posted for hearing on Thursday.

Wil die but not leave Sena: Sanjay Raut

Following his release from Arthur road jail on bail, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut reiterated his loyalty to the party. "I have spent my whole life in Shiv Sena. I lived with Sena and will die with Sena. I will prefer to die, but won't leave Sena ever," he said.

Bharat Jodo Yatra: Rahul targets PM Modi over demonetisation, projects going out of Maharashtra

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of unleashing an "economic tsunami" by carrying out demonetisation in November 2016.

Addressing a meeting in Nanded district of central Maharashtra on the 63rd day of his Bharat Jodo Yatra, he also said that projects like Tata- Airbus military aircraft venture and Vendanta-Foxconn semiconductor plant were taken away from the state and given to Gujarat because of the Assembly elections in the neighbouring state.

"These projects will be given to two-three industrialists who are the prime minister's friends, and the country's wealth is accumulating in their hands. Ports, infrastructure, telecom, agriculture sectors have been given to these people," Gandhi alleged. (PTI)

Patra Chawl case: Bail for Sena MP Sanjay Raut as court calls his arrest ‘witch-hunt’

Calling his arrest illegal and a “witch-hunt”, a special court granted bail to Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Wednesday, over three months after his arrest in connection with a redevelopment project in the northern suburbs of Mumbai. The court also rapped the Enforcement Directorate (ED) stating that it had used the exceptional powers of arrest “very casually”.

Special judge M G Deshpande said that Raut and his co-accused Pravin Raut, who was also granted bail, were arrested “for no reasons” by the central agency. Read more

Didn't know Sambhaji Bhide, showed him respect as an elderly person: Sudha Murthy

Author and philanthropist Sudha Murthy said she did not know who Sambhaji Bhide was and bowed before him as he is an elderly person. A video showing Sudha Murthy touching the feet of Bhide, a right-wing leader, in Sangli in western Maharashtra had gone viral, evoking sharp reactions.

Bhide was recently served a notice by the State Women's Commission for refusing to talk to a woman journalist because she had no ‘bindi' on her forehead.

“I don't know about his personal views. He is an elderly person, an old man. It is our tradition to touch the feet of an elderly person,” said Sudha Murthy, the wife of Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy, referring to the issue. (PTI)

"There have been many attacks on the Shiv Sena in the past three months but we have not given up. You can see this (the celebration by Sainiks). This is Balasaheb's Shiv Sena. It is fire..

He further said he will visit Balasaheb Thackeray's memorial, adding that, "Our soul is there."

Shiv Sena workers burst into celebration waiting for Sanjay Raut to walk out of Arthur Road jail

Hundreds of Shiv Sainiks gathered outside the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai awaiting the release of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut who was granted bail by a special court in a money laundering case a few hours back.

As the word spread that Raut got bail, Shiv Sena workers gathered outside the special court and burst firecrackers. They smeared each other with 'gulal' or coloured powder. Many Sainiks assembled outside the residences of Sanjay Raut in suburban Bhandup and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray in Bandra.

Raut's supporters began decorating his bungalow and a sound system was brought in. Raut's lawyer said they will try to complete the formalities by the evening to facilitate his release from prison.

HC refuses urgent stay on bail to Sanjay Raut; to hear ED plea on Thursday

The Bombay High Court refused to grant urgent stay on the bail granted to Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut by a lower court in an alleged money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Stating that it can not pass such an order without hearing both the parties, the high court posted the matter for hearing on Thursday.

A special court earlier in the day granted bail to Raut and co-accused Pravin Raut while rejecting the ED's request to stay the effect of the order till Friday.

"I have not even looked at the order. I don't know on what grounds bail has been granted. I don't know on what grounds you (the ED) have challenged the order. How can I grant a stay now without even hearing the parties...even if I have to make a prima facie order now," she said.

"If after hearing, I pass an order cancelling the bail then the accused persons can be taken back in custody," Justice Dangre added.

ED had arrested Sanjay Raut in Patra Chawl redevelopment case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested Rajya Sabha member Raut in July this year for his alleged role in financial irregularities in connection with the redevelopment of the Patra Chawl (row tenement) in suburban Goregaon.

Raut had in his bail plea claimed the case against him was a perfect example of "abuse of power" and "political vendetta". The ED had opposed Raut's plea, saying he played a major role in the money laundering case related to the Patra Chawl redevelopment and acted "behind the curtains" to avoid the money trail.

The ED's probe pertains to alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of the Patra Chawl and related financial transactions involving his wife and associates.

Adani Group chairperson Gautam Adani visited Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at his official residence in Mumbai.

The Tuesday night meeting between Adani and Shinde lasted for nearly 45 minutes. Adani Group has interests in ports, airports, power generation and transmission, and real estate. The group supplies electricity to the Mumbai suburban district.

Sudha Murthy prays for son-in-law Rishi Sunak at Sindhudurg temple

Writer and philanthropist Sudha Murthy prayed for the well-being of her son-in-law and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at a temple in coastal Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district.

Murthy, who arrived in Devgad tehsil of the district, around 500 km from Mumbai, the previous evening, visited the Durga Devi temple at Baparde village in the morning.

A video which went viral on social media showed the priest at the temple praying to Goddess Durga on Murthy's behalf, seeking well-being of her son-in-law who recently became the first Indian-origin prime minister of the United Kingdom.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said his party stands for unity while the BJP believes in uniformity, and asserted that their Bharat Jodo Yatra is not "mann ki baat" but aims to highlight people's concerns.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP do not believe in ''unity in diversity '' of which India is an example, Ramesh said addressing a press conference in Maharashtra's Nanded district during the Congress's ongoing foot march.

Stones thrown at local train in Thane, 3 passengers injured

Three passengers were injured when some unidentified persons threw stones at a local train in Maharashtra's Thane district, railway police said.

The incident took place at around 8 pm on Tuesday near Kalwa, they said. The injured persons were taken to a hospital for treatment, an official said. (PTI)

D Y Chandrachud, the 50th Chief Justice of India, and the verdicts he delivered as a Bombay HC judge

Justice D Y Chandrachud, who on Wednesday morning took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI), delivered verdicts that had a far-reaching impact on politics and social developments in Maharashtra during his tenure as a Bombay High Court judge.

Justice Chandrachud was a Bombay High Court judge for over 13 years between March 2000 and October 2013.

In July 2013, a bench led by Justice Chandrachud, while observing that “law was equal for everyone including ministers and their relatives”, had ordered the demolition of the ‘glass house’, a bungalow illegally built by the nephew of the then state excise minister Ganesh Naik in Navi Mumbai. Woman nabs molester inside Mumbai Metro train, gets him arrested

A 24-year-old woman was molested twice inside a Metro train Monday morning while she was on her way to work in Mumbai’s Andheri (East), police said. The woman, with the help of another passenger, nabbed the accused identified as Nadeem Ragiv, 29, and got him arrested, they said.

Ragiv was produced before a magistrate court Tuesday and sent to police custody for a day. According to police, the woman, a resident of Dombivali, boarded the Metro train to travel to her workplace at Marol, Andheri (East), around 11 am and stood near the door.

“When the Metro reached Jagruti Nagar, Ragiv bumped into her. The woman ignored it thinking it was a mistake. However, a few moments later the man, as per the victim, stood right behind her and tried to sexually abuse her,” officials said. Read more.

Mosquito menace in jails: After Lakdawala takes bottle of mosquitoes to court, Taloja jail increases checks of undertrials

Authorities in Taloja Jail have increased security checks of undertrials being taken to courts for hearings after an undertrial brought a bottle of mosquitoes to court earlier this month to highlight the mosquito menace faced by prisoners in the prison. Senior prison department officials have also sought a report on the incident from the Taloja jail superintendent.

On November 3, gangster Ejaz Lakdawala had appeared before a special court at Mumbai city civil and sessions court with a plastic mineral water bottle filled with mosquitoes. Lakdawala told the court that the mosquitoes were caught at Taloja jail. He was seeking permission from the court to use mosquito nets in prison and had brought the mosquitoes to draw attention towards the situation inside. Read more.

Five injured in cylinder blast; fire breaks out in vehicles parked under bridge

Two fire incidents were reported from Ville Parle in the western suburbs on Tuesday. While there was no loss of life, five persons were injured in one incident. The first incident took place in Kalpana Chawl in Ville Parle (East) where five persons were injured in a cylinder blast.

It took place around 6 am. It was labelled as Level – 1 (minor fire) by the Mumbai Fire Brigade and two fire engines were pressed into service. The flames were extinguished around 7.58 am.

The injured – Amar Rai (27), Jayram Yadav (27), Hare Kumar Rai (38), Rakesh Kumar Rai (30) and Arunkumar Rai (45) were rushed to the nearby V N Desai hospital and is currently undergoing treatment since they have sustained burn injuries. Civic officials said all the five injured are in a stable condition. Read more.

The BMC issued work orders for the project in October this year, and is now awaiting a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Traffic Police, according to officials from the civic body.

The project will take six months to complete and the BMC wants it to be completed before monsoon 2023. The Parel-TT flyover goes over the BA Road, helping unclog the crucial and busy junction of Parel-TT. BA Road is a crucial connector between the island city and the eastern suburbs, including Sion, Kurla, Chembur and Ghatkopar. Read more.

Gokhale Bridge closed: Chaos, confusion on Day 1

THE FIRST day of closure of the Gokhale Bridge, which connects Andheri (east) and Andheri (west), on Monday led to heavy traffic snarls in the western suburbs with motorists complaining of inconvenience and traffic police having to increase manpower to deal with the chaotic situation.

Around 11 am, a heavy flow of traffic was seen on the Andheri subway and Amboli junction in the jurisdiction of D N Nagar traffic police division in Andheri (west). The south-bound stretch of S V Road saw heavy traffic in Andheri. Similar heavy traffic was seen in the evening peak hours from 4 pm to 9 pm, said police sources.

In a bid to create more space for the crawling traffic, the BMC removed over 100 hawkers on S V road from morning till afternoon. In Santacruz division, Milan subway, and Thakare bridge saw heavy traffic. Captain Vinayak Gore flyover in Vile Parle, which connects east to west, as well as the Vile Parle junction from Andheri to Centaur Hotel on the western express highway, saw a heavy load of traffic.
