Kilambakkam bus terminus to be opened in June, rechristened as Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus
He added that the terminus will be ready for public use by June and the opening will coincide with the birth anniversary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK veteran M Karunanidhi.

Tamil Nadu Minister of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) P K Sekar Babu informed the Assembly on Thursday that the Kilambakkam bus terminus, which is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 393.74 crore on an 88.52 acre land, will be called the ‘Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus’.
He added that the terminus will be ready for public use by June and the opening will coincide with the birth anniversary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK veteran M Karunanidhi.
The foundation stone for the construction of the bus terminus was laid about four years ago. According to the DMK minister, the facility at Kilambakkam near Vandalur is capable of accommodating around 2,285 buses. The new bus terminus is expected to decongest the existing bus terminus at Koyambedu.
To facilitate the operation of contractual buses in Kilambakkam bus terminus, at Varadharajapuram, near the Outer Ring Road, a parking facility is set to be built at a cost of Rs 29 core. Further a park is set to be constructed at the Kilambakkam bus terminus at Rs 8 crore.
Babu also announced a slew of infrastructure developments the department is planning to implement.
He said at Rs 60 crore, the bus terminus being built in Kuthambakkam near Thirumazhisai will be developed as per international standards with all requisite facilities.
At Rs 30 crore, the beach near Tiruvottiyur will be developed to benefit the residents of North Chennai. A cycling-cum-walking track is set to be established for about five kilometre from Neelankarai to Akkarai along the east coast road (ECR) at a cost of Rs 20 crore.
The Tondiarpet bus shelter set up on a 6.67 acre land will be modernised at a cost of Rs 25 crore. The Koyambedu Wholesale Market complex is set to be provided a facelift at Rs 10 crore with a Medicare centre.
A foot-over bridge will be constructed at a cost of Rs 15 crore at Anna Salai – Dams Road – General Patters Road Junction. The Somasundram playground at T Nagar is set to be given a facelift with a running track, a space for practicing Yoga, open gymnasium, cricket nets among other facilities at Rs 10 crore.
