With the changing times, lifestyles of politicians have also undergone a transformation. Earlier, the stereotypical image of a political was an elderly man wearing a Nehru topi and jacket. Not any longer.

Sukhpal Singh Khaira,Congress MLA from Punjab, breaks all such illusions with his exuberance and dynamism. He likes to spend quality time reading and socialising, but what he enjoys most, besides politics,is following a regular health regime. An alumnus of Bishop Cotton School,Shimla,Khaira has always taken a keen interest in sports. “Till some years ago,my wife and I were regular joggers at the Sukhna Lake,” he smiles.

“Politics can be a very stressing engagement at times. It gets difficult to maintain your body while travelling frequently and visiting constituencies, but a convenient way to exercise is brisk walking. I cover about six kilometres, from my house to the lake,in about an hour,” he adds.

“Brisk walking boosts energy levels, helps fight stress and aids relaxation. I have a gym at home but the most natural way of safeguarding health is walking,” he advises. “It increases the body’s demand for oxygen, trains the heart, lungs and muscles to work more efficiently.”

“In these times of abundant technology,we tend to overlook the simplest way to attain good health. Walking puts the least amount of pressure on the earth’s resources too,” he quips.
