Congress councillor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation,Devinder Singh Babla, along with the former chairman of the Grain Market Arhati Association,Rakesh Sahni, was booked in a case of cheating and criminal conspiracy on Wednesday. The two are in the dock for accommodating as many as 10 ineligible people during an auction of 69 platforms in the grain market. The auction was held in July.
The case was registered on the basis of an inquiry conducted by Additional Deputy Commissioner A P S Shergill, and after the senior standing counsel of the UT Administration gave his legal opinion in the matter.
The complainant,Suraj Parkash Ahuja, owner of shop No 9-10 in the grain market, said in his complaint that irregularities were committed during the auctioning and allotting of platforms in the market on July 24.
It was alleged that the accused had manipulated the list of allottees to accommodate their chosen people. As per the original list,59 platforms were to be allotted during the auction against a licence fee. It was also alleged that the accused deleted names of six genuine allottees, but added more names to bring the number of allottees to 69. The platforms, which were originally meant for 59 allottees, were ultimately allotted to 69 people.
A Case under sections 420/465/468/471/120-B of the Indian Penal Code has been registered in the Sector 26 police station.
