Former Union Minister and former Chief Minister Arjun Munda lost the Lok Sabha election 2024 from Khunti, Jharkhand. Congress's Kalicharan Munda defeated him by 1,49,675 votes. Kalicharan Munda got a total of 5,11,647 votes. Savitri Devi stood third by getting 12,300 votes.
Arjun Munda has been an influential voice in the development and governance of the state of Jharkhand. Born on May 3, 1968, in Khrangajhar, Jamshedpur, Munda's journey in politics is marked by his deep connection with tribal issues and his consistent efforts towards the development of Jharkhand.
Munda's political career began in the early 1990s, a period that saw the rise of regional aspirations and the demand for a separate state of Jharkhand. He was actively involved in the Jharkhand Movement, a campaign that sought to establish a new state, primarily for the tribal populations of South Bihar. This movement was rooted in the long-standing grievances of the tribal communities over issues like land rights, forest conservation, and socio-economic marginalization.
In 2000, when the state of Jharkhand was formally established, Arjun Munda became one of its foremost political leaders. His deep understanding of tribal issues and his commitment to the development of the region were instrumental in his rise within the BJP and in Jharkhand's political landscape. He first became a Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1995, representing the Kharsawan constituency, a role he continued after the formation of Jharkhand.
Arjun Munda's most significant political achievement came when he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, a position he held three times between 2003 and 2013. His tenure as Chief Minister was marked by efforts to bring stability to the state's political environment, which had been characterized by frequent changes in government and leadership. Munda focused on governance issues, infrastructural development, and policies aimed at improving the lives of tribal and rural communities.
