The traffic police said the RTO concerned was formally informed about the violations on January 3.
A Kerala student Wednesday paid a hefty fine of Rs 1.11 lakh to the Yelahanka Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Bengaluru for multiple violations of the Motor Vehicles Act, including modifying his car’s silencer and repainting the vehicle without permission. The Yelahanka RTO had imposed the fine earlier this month.
The violations first came to light on January 2 when the student, who was in the city to celebrate the New Year, was driving the modified car along Hennur Road. Videos showing flames shooting out of the exhaust and the vehicle producing a deafening noise began circulating on social media. Passersby also alerted the local traffic police.
Acting on the inputs and video evidence, the Hennur traffic police traced and intercepted the vehicle, which was then seized for further examination.
The traffic police said the RTO concerned was formally informed about the violations on January 3.
“This was a clear case of illegal modification. Rather than booking a routine case, we chose to involve the RTO so that the maximum penalty permissible under the law could be imposed,” a traffic police officer said.
“The vehicle is a 2002 model, and its current market value will be around Rs 70,000 only,” the officer added.
Following due procedure, RTO officials levied a maximum penalty of Rs 1,11,500 under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The police said the steep penalty was imposed deliberately to set a precedent and deter motorists from violating motor vehicle rules and endangering public safety.
