When the BJP came out with its vision document for Delhi on Tuesday, it made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The document referred to people from the North East as ‘immigrants’. The Delhi BJP was quick to regret the “error” but , by then, the damage was done.

The apology issued by the Delhi unit said, “In a paragraph dedicated to people and students of North East in the Delhi Vision Document issued by BJP, the word immigrant has been used due to a typing error. Delhi BJP is committed to the welfare of our brothers and sisters of the North East. We deeply regret the wrong word used. The intention was to write migrant.”

Unveiled after a delay, the vision document does not have much to offer in term of specifics. There is no mention or promise of full statehood, a demand that had been in the party’s manifesto for past 14 years.

Electricity and water issues that were top priority of former Delhi unit chiefs Vijay Goel and Harsh Vardhan have lost their impetus. The vision document is vague on how much the electricity tariff will be brought down by.

It reads, “electricity tariff will be brought down considerably and competition will be promoted among discoms. These companies will be brought under the ambit of RTI and people will be encouraged to put up solar panels on their rooftops. Excess energy will be purchased by the government.”
