The makeshift toilet where the incident happened.
A 16-year-old girl’s throat was slit after she allegedly resisted sexual harassment by her 20-year-old former neighbour while she had gone to the toilet in East Delhi’s Yamuna Khadar area. The girl, however, survived the attack and is being treated at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Delhi.
Family members of the girl said she had gone to the the toilet -a makeshift arrangement in the field – at around 1:30 pm and that the boy followed her and tried to sexually harass her. “One of the family members saw the boy following her. At the toilet, the boy tried to sexually harass her and when my daughter resisted, the boy dragged her along the ground for around 100 metres and cut her throat,” said father (40) of the victim.
The father said that after the incident the accused ran away and her daughter managed to make it to their jhuggi where a family member saw her lying in a pool of blood. A PCR call was made and the victim was rushed to the hospital.

Family members of both the victim and the accused are from Badayun in UP and work as tenant farmers in the Yamuna Flood plains. The victim’s younger brother said that earlier the accused’s house used to be beside their’s.
“Around six months ago, the boy had also tried to eve tease her and misbehave with her. He had also tried sexually harassing my sister, but we resolved the matter and shifted our jhuggi 100 metres away in the field,” said the younger brother. The relatives of the victim’s family said the accused’s family members did not take the issue seriously despite several incidents.
Residents in the area mostly grow food crops and don’t have access to a toilet. A neighbour said, “We have a temporary arrangement. We dig a pit, layer it with branches from trees and use it as latrine. We don’t have any pucca toilets here.” Meanwhile, police have arrested the accused and a case has been registered at Pandav Nagar Police Station. Deputy Commissioner of Police (east) Rishi Pal said, “The girl was known to the accused and she refused the sexual advances. The boy in turn cut the girl’s throat with a knife. The girl has survived and is being treated.”
