In a major relief for commuters heading to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali’s new alternative link road being developed to ease pressure on the existing Airport Road is nearing completion. According to GMADA officials, one side of the road will be opened to traffic by the end of this month while the entire stretch is expected to be fully operational by March 31, 2026.
The new 8.5-km parallel link road, stretching from Bawa White House crossing to Airport Crossing, is designed to reduce congestion on the main Airport Road. Only two components remain unfinished: the double-lane underpass beneath the railway line and a bridge at the N-choe. The proposal for the reinforced concrete box passage has already been sent to the Railways, and funds have been allocated.
GMADA’s engineering wing stated that even if railway approvals take longer, the completed motorable stretch will still be opened within the announced timeframe to provide early relief to commuters. Once fully functional, the new link road is expected to improve Mohali’s traffic flow and connectivity.
Passengers travelling from Chandigarh and nearby areas will no longer need to take the longer route via Phase 11, IISER light point and Airport Chowk. The new road will offer a direct, shorter access to the airport, reducing travel time and easing traffic congestion on the existing route.
GMADA Chief Administrator Sakhi Sawhney said the project is being fast-tracked on the directions of the state government. “The work is almost complete. One stretch of the road will be made motorable by the end of this month, which will provide initial relief to commuters. The entire project is expected to be completed by March 31, after which the road will be fully operational,” she said.
