Meanwhile, Wall Street sank deeper into a bear market, with the S&P 500 hitting a two-year intraday low as US Fed policymakers showed an appetite for more rate hikes.
After a positive beginning, the 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 461.82 points to 57,607.04 in initial trade. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty advanced 144.15 points to 17,160.45.
At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 81.45 against the dollar, then touched 81.30, registering a gain of 37 paise over its previous close.
The weakness in the rupee also affected sentiment of equity market investors, as the benchmark Sensex at the BSE tanked 953 points, or 1.6 per cent, to close at 57,145.22.
Falling for the fourth day running on Monday, the 30-share BSE Sensex tanked 816.72 points to 57,282.20 points in the initial trade. The NSE Nifty fell 254.4 points to 17,072.95 points.
While some part of the decrease could be due to valuation changes, currency experts said much of it would be due to the central bank intervening in the currency market to prevent the rupee from depreciating more sharply against the US dollar.

The partially convertible rupee closed at 80.99 per dollar, against a previous close of 80.86. It fell to a low of 81.2250 during the session before the Reserve Bank of India likely intervened, traders at state-run banks told Reuters.

The rupee closed at 79.9750 per U.S. dollar, down from 79.75 in the previous session. The rupee opened a tad lower at 79.79 and continued to toil lower through the session.
