Right-wing activist Puneeth Kerehalli Saturday secured bail from a Bengaluru court, a day after the Bengaluru rural police arrested him on charges of trespassing into the residences of migrant workers and threatening them.
According to the police, Kerehalli allegedly entered the homes of migrant workers without authorisation and questioned them about their identity, recording the incidents and later uploading the videos on social media. In the videos, he purportedly claimed that the operation was aimed at identifying alleged illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
The videos went viral and were widely shared among right-wing activists. Several BJP leaders also circulated the clips on social media.
The police said Kerehalli is a habitual offender and has been booked in multiple criminal cases in the past, including a murder case.
Following his arrest, supporters of Kerehalli attempted to gather near the Bannerghatta police station. However, the police prevented them from assembling. Anticipating possible law-and-order issues, the police took precautionary measures and made additional security arrangements in the area.
Meanwhile, soon after securing bail, Kerehalli released another video on social media, in which he allegedly warned about severe consequences.
