Constituency overview
In Patan, Congress’s Bahadursinh Thakor and Purushottamdas Patel were the first two MPs elected in the Lok Sabha elections in 1957 and 1962 respectively. The constituency remained a Congress stronghold for a long time and the party’s candidates won in the general elections in 1971, 1980, 1984, 1999 and 2009. It was in the 1991 Lok Sabha elections when the BJP won the constituency for the first time with the victory of its candidate — late Mahesh Kanodia , a popular musician and singer. He represented the constituency for another three terms — 1996, 1998 and 2004 — in Lok Sabha.
In 2009, Jagdish Thakor, a Koli community leader from Congress and former Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president, was elected. The constituency was also represented by Liladharbhai Vaghela — a farmer, social activist and journalist. He was the founder editor of Banas Sandesh weekly for over two decades, and also a state cabinet minister in the Chimanbhai Patel government. He had a unique distinction of getting elected to the Assembly on Congress, Janata Dal and BJP tickets. However, the Thakor community leader shot to limelight when he contested the Lok Sabha elections on BJP ticket against Congress heavyweight Shankarsinh Vaghela in 2004.
MP Profile
A graduate from Dabhoda in Mehsana district, Bharatsinhji Dabhi’s candidature emerged as a surprise not only among his opponents but also within the party. “Though he was not seen much in his constituency during his tenure as an MP, the internal survey of the party revealed that no one except him would be able to get the votes for the party and thus the mandate was given to him,” said a senior local BJP leader, pleading anonymity. He was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha in 2019 from Patan. Between 2007 and 2019, he was elected thrice as the MLA from Mehsana’s Kheralu.
