Conrad rushes to Manipur to negotiate Govt formation with BJP

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and his brother Power Minister James PK Sangma on Friday skipped the Assembly session here to rush to Manipur to negotiate with BJP in a bid to include the National People's Party in the next government in that state.

However, BJP which has won a simple majority in the Manipur assembly in elections, counting for which concluded Thursday and its state leaders including care-taker chief minister N Biren Singh have indicated they are not too keen to continue the alliance with NPP which is part of the NDA, in the state.

The NPP has won 7 seats and is the second largest party in Manipur while the BJP has won 32 seats. The saffron party's leaders have however indicated they favoured taking support from the Naga People's Front which has 5 seats. (PTI)

Explained: Key takeaways from Manipur Assembly Election Results 2022

Growth of BJP: From 21 seats in 2017, when it was behind the Congress (27) and needed to cobble up an alliance with smaller parties to form the government, the BJP is set to do so by itself now. Its poll planks for peace, development, stability — a stark contrast to the tumultuous 15-year Congress regime under the Okram Ibobi Singh, which was marked by bandhs, blockades and a sharp rise in extra-judicial killings — seem to have struck a chord with voters. In Manipur, NPP betters its tally to emerge as 2nd largest party

As much as Thursday’s mandate was about the BJP hitting the majority mark in a historic win in Manipur, it also signalled emergence of a strong regional party in the Northeast: National People’s Party (NPP). The regional party that leads a coalition government under Conrad Sangma in neighbouring Meghalaya transitioned from being ‘kingmaker’ in 2017 to the second largest party in 2022, even ahead of the Congress.

According to the tally at 8pm, the NPP, which pitched itself as a strong regional alternative to the BJP and the Congress, had won seven seats, three more than its tally in the 2017 elections. A communique from the party’s Media and Communications Cell on Thursday evening said: “With concerted effort, hard work and a strong fight, we have emerged as the second largest party in Manipur.” Read Tora Agarwala's report

Biren takes BJP past magic figure, Congress is trounced

The BJP is all set to return to power in Manipur for a second straight term, hitting the majority mark as results of the Assembly elections came in on Thursday. The Congress, on the other hand, has been decimated in its once-bastion — from being the single-largest party with 27 seats in 2017, the party managed to win a mere five seats.

The BJP’s victory, won on the planks of ‘peace and development’, signals that it has been able to successfully hold its own in the often fickle electoral landscape of Manipur. While in 2017, the BJP, which won 21 seats, went all out to cobble up a last-minute alliance, with the help of smaller parties such as the National People’s Party (NPP), Naga People’s Front (NPF) and a few Independents, this time, the party will not require any help.

The BJP has been able to drive home the relative peace of the last five years in conflict-ridden Manipur, a stark contrast to the 15-year tumultuous Congress regime under the Okram Ibobi Singh government, which was marked by bandhs, blockades, and a sharp rise in extra judicial killings. Besides, it is likely that Manipur, like other small states of the Northeast region, gravitated to the party which is in power at the Centre. Read Tora Agarwala 's report
