Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said at a rally in Karnataka that the coming Assembly elections in Karnataka were being held “to hand over the future of the state to (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi ji”. The speech received flak from the Congress that accused Shah of insulting the people of the state.
“This election is not just to make our candidates MLAs or ministers … This election is to hand over the future of the state to Modi ji. This election is to make Karnataka a fully developed state,” Shah said at a rally in Terdal, Bagalkot district.
Congress leader Siddaramaiah said in response, “In a democratic system, citizens vote for such representatives who serve them rather than those who are slaves to rulers. Amit Shah, you have not only insulted the democratic set-up but also self-respecting Kannadigas.”
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, said BJP and Shah were insulting Karnataka daily. “J P Nadda ji says Kannadigas need blessings of Modi, not vice versa. Can they not find a single Kannadiga to hand over the state of Karnataka to run the state that it has to be handed over to Modi? BJP’s arrogance has crossed all barriers,” he said.
Shah said in his speech that the election was for generational change. “We will form the government under Modi’s leadership again. If the Congress is voted even by mistake, then it will lead to all-time high corruption, appeasement and all-time high dynastic politics, and the entire state will suffer from riots.”
On BJP’s Lingayat leaders Jagadish Shettar and Laxman Savadi joining Congress, he said the Opposition party was mistaken if they felt that this would benefit it. “The Congress has always insulted Lingayats,” Shah told the crowd
