On Friday, four Congress lawmakers gave the crucial party meeting a skip, without giving any reason for their absence. The CLP meet was called as a show of strength in a counter to an alleged bid by the BJP to topple the coalition government in Karnataka.
In letters sent to all the party MLAs, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah has said that any absence “will be viewed seriously and it will be considered that you have voluntarily decided to leave the primary membership of the Indian National Congress’’.
According to BJP leaders, the party’s central leadership did not back any attempts at poaching legislators as it will show the party in poor light ahead of Lok Sabha polls. They also pointed out that this can give the party an opportunity to expose “unsuccessful” experiments at forming coalitions.
Alleging that Modi and his government were against the agriculture sector, he questioned their contribution to the farming community. "Ok we have given lollipop, what pop has he given? What has he given?" Siddaramaiah asked.
Taking a jibe at the opposition party, Modi said Congress is a factory of lollipops and can't be trusted. On Friday also, he had attacked the party on not meeting the loan waiver promises in Karnataka and termed it as a 'big joke' with the farmers.
Even though most exit polls predicted a hung assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form the government in Karnataka with a simple majority, handing out a severe drubbing to the ruling Congress and relegating the Janata Dal (Secular) to the third spot.
