The United States has charged an Iranian man in connection with an alleged plot, reportedly directed by Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), to assassinate president-elect Donald Trump, the US Justice Department announced on Friday.

In a statement, the department said Shakeri had informed law enforcement that he was “tasked on October 7, 2024, with providing a plan to kill” Trump. Shakeri was described as an IRGC asset based in Tehran who had previously immigrated to the US as a child but was deported around 2008 after a conviction for robbery.

The department also reported charges against two other individuals allegedly involved in a separate plot to kill a US citizen of Iranian origin in New York.
